The need for CPD
As a leader in the build and delivery of online Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for optometrists, Centre for Eye Health (CFEH) has a goal to improve eye health and quality of life by reducing the incidence of preventable vision loss.
CFEH required a cost-effective, user-friendly platform to deliver quality CPD to their members and achieve their goals. The LMS needed to be able publish and commercialise their Intellectual Property (IP), incorporate eCommerce in multiple training modules and have the ability to facilitate training through global expansion.
CFEH and CPD: training challenges
CFEH are acknowledged as a leader in their sector. As part of their charter, they deliver online CPD to their members. To achieve this goal, CFEH had to overcome a range of challenges, which included platform, eCommerce, hosting and design.
CFEH had initially invested in the build of their own portal on an open-source platform. They found; however, that the platform was difficult to navigate and the e-Learning lacked sophistication, intuition and innovation.
A platform that delivers
In addition, the association wished to deliver CPD as a series of courses, learning programs, webinars and events. The current learning platform lacked capacity to deliver on these critical functions.
CFEH’s key challenge was that they needed to deliver different CPD programs to a range of member groups. This was further complicated by their need to assign CPD points to each training activity, which would track the CPD points for individual members. They completed an extensive market scan and all LMS’s required custom programming to deliver the functionality.
The final challenges related to the flexibility of the eCommerce functionality. CFEH needed a shopping cart to allow members to purchase individual courses, events, webinars and learning programs.
Limitations from customising the user experience was also a significant reason for transitioning from their initial platform; the portal lacked flexibility in features and they needed a LMS that could deal with the complicated nature of CPD in accordance with the Optometry Board of Australia and AHPRA guidelines.

CFEH makes the switch

In addition to the suite of CPD functions out-of-the box, the interface is customised for CFEH and their team can use the website module to maintain the external web pages while the LMS manages the internal CPD content and member pages.
The global expansion of CFEH CPD
After the success of CFEH portal in Australia, the association has duplicated the PowerHouse LMS portal and Mediasphere host their Dublin-based training from our servers in London. CFEH plans to expand their CPD on PowerHouse in additional countries in the coming years.
